Quotes of Zion is an independent, non-profit project researched, curated and maintained by a single researcher (C. Nooij). What began as a small hobby website during my teenage years gradually developed into a long-term historical research project. After completing my studies, I decided to professionalize the project by acquiring its own domain name, expanding the collection and applying more rigorous standards of documentation.

The project has two primary objectives. First, it aims to document historical and contemporary expressions of appreciation for the Jewish people, Zionism and the State of Israel as a contribution to combating antisemitism. Second, it seeks to encourage and inspire Jews by demonstrating that support, admiration and friendship have existed throughout history and continue to exist today.

The project does not seek to conceal its purpose of documenting expressions of support for the Jewish people, Zionism and the State of Israel. Its commitment to transparency lies not in neutrality of subject matter, but in documenting historical sources accurately, honestly and transparently.

The collection consists primarily of quotations by non-Jews, reflecting the project's original objective of documenting expressions of support by non-Jews. Over time, quotations by Jews have also been added, as they provide valuable insight into Jewish thought and identity. The collection includes quotations expressing admiration for the Jewish people, support for Zionism, or appreciation for the State of Israel and Israeli society. Occasionally, even statements made by opponents of the Jewish people are included when they unintentionally acknowledge qualities such as Jewish resilience, intelligence, perseverance or influence.

Quotations are gathered from a wide variety of sources, including historical books, parliamentary debates, government records, state visits, interviews, newspapers, television broadcasts, online videos and social media posts. Much research is conducted through digitized historical libraries and archives, particularly German-language publications, Commonwealth parliamentary records and the proceedings of the United States Congress. In many cases, quotations are also discovered incidentally while reading news articles, columns or other historical material.

Artificial intelligence has become a useful supplementary research aid, particularly for locating additional references and suggesting new avenues of investigation. However, AI remains insufficiently precise for systematic quotation research. Consequently, fewer than two percent of the quotations in the collection were initially identified with the assistance of AI, and every quotation is manually verified before publication.

Quotes of Zion aims to document sources as accurately as possible. References may include books, journal articles, newspaper reports, interviews, videos, social media posts or other publicly available material. The project does not determine the reliability or credibility of a source; instead, it seeks to identify and cite the source as transparently as possible, allowing readers to evaluate the evidence for themselves. Even authoritative publications can contain factual errors, while less prominent sources may accurately preserve authentic statements.

Because the project has existed for many years, a limited number of quotations were collected during its earliest stages, when documentation standards were less rigorous than they are today. In some of these cases, the original webpage, video or publication has since disappeared, making it impossible to recover the primary source despite repeated searches. Where this occurs, the absence of the original source is explicitly indicated. Efforts to recover these original sources continue, although the project's primary focus remains the ongoing expansion and improvement of the collection.

The collection is not intended to be exhaustive, nor could it ever be. Historical research continually uncovers previously overlooked books, newspapers, archives and recordings, allowing existing entries to be improved and entirely new historical quotations to be added. At the same time, history itself continues to unfold. Public figures, writers, politicians, scholars and ordinary people continue to express new views on the Jewish people, Zionism and the State of Israel. Consequently, Quotes of Zion is designed as a living project that continues to grow through both historical discovery and contemporary developments.

Historical research is never complete. Whenever an earlier, more authoritative or more precise source is identified, existing entries are updated accordingly. Suggestions, corrections and previously unknown primary sources are therefore always welcome.

Authenticity is the guiding principle of Quotes of Zion. Quotations are never invented, fabricated or deliberately altered in order to strengthen their message. Doing so would undermine the very purpose of the project.

Where necessary, brief clarifications may be inserted in square brackets to identify a person, place or subject that would otherwise be unclear to modern readers. Such editorial additions are intended solely to improve readability and never to alter the meaning of the original quotation.

In a limited number of cases, a source explicitly paraphrases a person's statement rather than presenting it in direct speech. Where the wording itself is clearly provided by the source, it may occasionally be converted into quotation form for consistency within the collection. In such instances, no new wording is introduced. At most, minor grammatical adjustments (such as changes in verb inflection or a shift from third person to first person) are made while preserving the original wording and meaning as faithfully as possible.

Quotes of Zion is intended to become a multilingual resource. At present, the collection is fully available in English, Dutch and German, with a growing selection of Hebrew translations.

Wherever possible, translations are prepared manually. Translation is a craft requiring historical awareness, linguistic nuance and sensitivity to context, and for that reason the project does not rely on artificial intelligence to produce its published translations. Most translations have been prepared by the project's author, C. Nooij. Exceptions include quotations for which an established published translation already exists, such as those found in books or reliable local publications. Whenever possible, translations aim to preserve not only the literal meaning of the original text but also its historical style and tone.

Ultimately, Quotes of Zion seeks to preserve and document historical voices as accurately and transparently as possible, allowing those voices to speak for themselves.
